Chapter Sixteen
Ravi’s skin broke out in a sweat as the tempo increased on the fast-paced music. While American Pie was a great classic tune, it wasn’t one of his favorite pieces to perform, especially not solo. He had trouble turning the pages quick enough without missing a note, and he found himself wishing he had a third arm. Nevertheless, with so many people requesting the song, it was impossible to say no, especially with Trevor monitoring his performance. He only prayed that everyone was too drunk to notice if he hit a sour note here and there.
“Goooo, Ravi! You rock!”
Ravi didn’t dare look up from his sheet music, but there was no mistaking Elisa’s rowdy cheer which was quickly followed by a catcall. Over the last few weeks, Ravi had gotten to know Erin’s clique almost as intimately as Erin herself. He and Drew had even spent the last full moon fishing together while the girls did their thing. Who would’ve thunk it? He’d become buddies with a real celebrity. Though when they were all together, Ravi rarely thought about Drew’s star status anymore. The important thing was that he fit in with a group for the first time since his band broke up, another residual effect of Elizabeth’s death. Even his old bandmates had to draw the line eventually when he kept showing up to practice wasted, and it took a lot of drinking to put off a group of musicians. After all he’d gone through, all he’d lost, it was nice to have friends again. It was proof he was moving in the right direction.
“Yeahhhhhh!”
“Woooooo!”
Wow, the crowd sure is rowdy tonight.
Ravi was hanging out at Woody’s a lot, even when he wasn’t performing, and while the patrons were always enthusiastic, with some hitting the dance floor and a few singing along, he’d never experienced anything quite like this. Every time he reached the refrain, the voices around him grew in volume. As he finished up the last few lines, which he knew by heart, he finally felt comfortable lifting his gaze from the sheet music. Tons of people had circled the stage, so many it resembled a mosh pit.
Out in the audience, Erin and her friends were front and center, clapping and singing along, jumping up and down like they were at a real concert, their voices lost in the din of noise. The cheering was so loud, it pretty much drowned out Ravi altogether. The whole scene had his heart racing with exhilaration. He wondered if this was how Drew felt when he was surrounded by adoring fans. He didn’t think it could get any more exciting or any more insane. Then, just as he reached the last few bars of the song, just as he strummed the final cord, a shower of….of something rained down on him.
At first Ravi had no idea what was going on. It all happened so fast, he was blinded by the unexpected surge.
“What the…?”
He hadn’t meant to speak into the microphone,
